Text by Christoph Tannert
The best way to interpret Tommy Høviks works on paper is to remember Franz Schubert’s Lieder or some poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Even though it may sound quite incredible, we rediscover in Høvik’s cloud projections the frail balance between spirituality and nature, sense and sensibility, consciousness and instinct. Høvik’s sensitivity takes us back to the same nostalgic refinement, translated into forms, that is characteristic for Schubert’s Lieder. Mourning and the “comfort of tears” are intimately connected to the dignity of one’s own feelings that Høvik describe in his images. Both his works depict the human being tied to the land but yearning for the sky, a creature in search for perfection.
